At the weekend, I met a friend who flashed a fancy phone. “iPhone,” I asked. “No, it is an LG Chocolate,” she replied. “But it gives me some trouble.” I might have jumped to conclusions because LG is a late entrant into the business, but then, my Nokia E71 also hangs up on me sometimes. I simply switch it off and then on (a trick learnt as an old Windows user). It comes back to life, but I do think we need to get some smart consumer thinking into smartphones.

Experts have warned that hackers can comfortably crack questions used as security checks in webmails.
Joseph Bonneau, a security researcher at the University of Cambridge, insists that attackers can break into at least 1 in every 80 accounts if they get three chances to guess answers.
“The numbers were worse than we thought,” the BBC quoted him as saying.
He recommends webmail firms to replace simple answers with more complex tests to confirm a person’s identity.
Bonneau teamed up with Mike Just and Greg Matthews, from the University of Edinburgh, to check how frequently attackers can be successful in answering security questions.
The researchers claim that hackers are successful in getting answers to security-check questions correct every 80 accounts, as information people use as answers are often publicly accessible, such as US marriage and birth records which were viewable online for a long time.
He said: “We measured how hard it was to guess answers. Asking what was the name of someone’s first grade teacher seems like a secure choice. The problem is that there’s a tonne of teachers out there named Mrs Smith.”
Bonneau warns that cyber criminals maintain a long lists of e-mail addresses to attack.
He added: “They have the big list and most of them they will not get enough access to.
“Webmail was never really designed for security but it is taking on a pretty important security role. Once you have an e-mail account you can take over a lot of other things with it.”

Microsoft has issued a new software download that will let European users of Windows operating system decide if they wish to keep Internet Explorer as their computer’s default browser, the company said on Monday.
The move is designed to ease concerns of European regulators that the Microsoft browser was getting an unfair advantage over its competitors because it comes as the default browser on Microsoft’s dominant Windows operating system.
The new software update installs a pop-up window on users’ PCs that prompts them to pick which of 12 surfing tools they would like to set as their default browser. In addition to Internet Explorer the choices also include Firefox, Apple’s Safari, Google’s Chrome and the Norwegian browser Opera.
The move comes as a new survey by NetApplications revealed that Internet Explorer is still used by 61 percent of all web surfers last month, compared to 24 percent who used Firefox, five percent for Chrome, four percent for Safari and just two percent for Opera.

Microsoft has announced the Beta release of Office 2010 at Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in Los Angeles. Other office related products were made available such as the SharePoint Server 2010, Project 2010, Visio 2010, and Office Web Apps for businesses and Office Mobile 2010. The Office Mobile 2010 is tailored for Windows Mobile 6.5 devices and no plans were mentioned on backward compatibility for other devices.
The limelight for the Beta release was fixed on the Office 2010 where in major revisions and other inclusion were created. Some of the notable modifications made were the Outlook interface and SkyDrive integration. The SkyDrive will serve as Microsoft’s online storage device with a 25GB capacity. The Outlook will have added features like the SharePoint and Outlook Social Connector which will facilitate real time interaction and social (or business) networking feeds. Google has introduced a “safety mode” for YouTube watchers that filters out smut and other objectionable material, the company announced.
Customers can opt in to the “safety mode”, which also automatically hides comments on any videos. If the user decides to view the comments, all objectionable words are censored by Google’s smut filter.
